St. Mary's makes postseason WHITE CITY -- St. Mary's goalkeeper Andrew Lent got his seventh shutout of the season without having to defend a shot by Cascade Christian in District 6 boys soccer Thursday. The Crusaders broke open a 0-0 deadlock in the second half en route to a 3-0 win, securing the team's first-ever trip to the postseason. St. Mary's improved to a 6-2-1 league record and an 8-2-1 overall mark with only a non-league match remaining in the regular season. The Crusaders are tied for third place in the league with North Valley, which defeated Illinois Valley 8-3 Thursday. It will be determined today how the St. Mary's-North Valley tie is broken -- either through a playoff or through head-to-head play (St. Mary's won the regular-season meeting between the two). Only three teams advance to state. Thursday, the Crusaders had a hard time getting the ball to fall against the Challengers. "We had a lot of pressure on Cascade Christian the whole game," St. Mary's coach Eric Wolff said. "We had a lot of opportunities to score, but just couldn't get one to go in." The game was scoreless until the 66th minute, when St. Mary's freshman Matt Burt scored off an assist from sophomore William Kongma. Kongma scored in the 71st minute off an assist by Gabe Schonerd, and Burt scored again in the 75th minute off an assist by Mako Miyamoto. Wolff praised the performance of Jordan Frinkess, Peter Staver and Jordan Frankel for holding the Challengers at bay. HIDDEN VALLEY 4, PHOENIX 2 -- At Murphy, Matt Johnson had two goals and one assist and Dan Andrews and Jesse Johnson added one goal apiece as Hidden Valley capped the regular season with a 9-0 Skyline Conference record. The Mustangs, 11-1-1 overall, have a bye in the first round of the state playoffs. They'll host a second-round match on Nov. 10. Hidden Valley led 2-1 at halftime before Matt Johnson made it 3-1 in the 45th minute on an assist from Ben Jaramillo. Phoenix's Zack Kohler connected in the 50th minute to cut the Mustangs' lead to 3-2 and it stayed that way until the 75th minute when Jesse Johnson scored on a pass from Matt Johnson. Al Albright scored Phoenix's other goal. Hidden Valley finished the Skyline season with a 53-6 edge in goals. NORTH VALLEY 8, ILLINOIS VALLEY 3 -- At Cave Junction, Tom Spagnolo had a hat trick for North Valley and Danny Riley added two goals for the Knights. Other players contributing a goal for the Knights were Jared Ratajazak, Jeff Bass and Luke Gentry. Oshia Snitskin had two goals and Sawyer Christiansen one for the Cougars. The Cougars finished their season 6-6-1 overall and 3-6 in conference play. HENLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 1 -- At Klamath Falls, Henley clinched the No. 2 seed to the state playoffs, finishing the regular season with a 7-1-1 league mark and improving to 10-3-1 on the season. The Hornets will host the third-place team from District 5 on Saturday. On Thursday the Hornets scored first on an unassisted goal by Peter Isaacson in the fifth minute. The Chieftains tied it in the 25th minute on a goal by Hector Vallejo. Peter Boyle put the Hornets ahead for good in the 32nd minute off an assist by Joe Salvati for a 2-1 halftime lead. Teammate Dewey Pizano finished the scoring in the second half off an assist from Sean Carlson. BONANZA 3, MAZAMA 0 -- At Bonanza, Tyler Mockridge scored two goals for Bonanza and Shawn Earp had one. District 6 Girls ROGUE RIVER 1, HENLEY 0 -- At Rogue River, freshman Katheryn Smith scored the only goal 10 minutes into the second half of the match and goalkeeper Sarah Zempel earned the shutout. Rogue River coach Bennie Stalker also praised the play of Liz Lewis, DeAnna Miller, Keri Cain and Erica Gayler. HIDDEN VALLEY 0, PHOENIX 0, OT -- At Talent, Phoenix clinched a state playoff berth after playing to a scoreless tie after 100 minutes of soccer at Hagler-James Park. The Pirates had a big edge in ball possession and shots, but Hidden Valley senior goal keeper Vanessa Vellozzi frustrated the Pirates. Vellozzi didn't allow the Pirates any second opportunities. For Phoenix, junior goalie Tara Curtis recorded her sixth shutout of the season. The Pirates also received strong play from senior sweeper Laura Jacobs. NORTH VALLEY 12, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 -- At Merlin, senior midfielder Julia Arnado scored her first hat trick of the season while Ashley Enoch and Marissa Baurer contributed two goals apiece as North Valley rolled to the District 6 victory. Illinois Valley goalie Jennifer Thompson was peppered throughout and saved the Cougars from getting beat worse by registering an eye-catching 24 saves.
