PREPS Rupp to take over as South AD Comment By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry Posted May. 27, 2016 at 6:01 PM Updated May 27, 2016 at 10:47 PM By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry Posted May. 27, 2016 at 6:01 PM Updated May 27, 2016 at 10:47 PM » Social News Tim Rupp has held many positions over his career as a coach, teacher and administrator in the Rogue Valley, but he couldn’t be more excited about his latest venture. South Medford High School Principal Damian Crowson announced Rupp as the school’s new athletic director on Friday, taking care of half the duties by Dennis Murphy, who is retiring this year. Murphy has served as the school’s AD for 16 years. “Replacing Murphy is replacing a legend a little bit,” said Rupp. “He’s a South Medford Panther through and through, and I think if I’ve learned anything from him it’s that I am South Medford blue through and through, too. I’m excited to inherit what I have here and excited to build on that and build on South Medford High School in general.” Rupp is the track and field coach and the Math Department chair among other roles. He has 30-plus years of coaching experience, including a brief stint with the Panther girls basketball program in 2007, and has prior administrative experience as assistant principal and principal at Eagle Point High School from2008-14. “We felt really comfortable with his leadership style and his vision for athletics and student-athletes at South Medford,” said Crowson. “We’re really excited about where we are with our after-school activities, and we wanted someone who has that same vision of where we currently are that Dennis has worked very hard to build in his time here. We felt it was almost a passing of the torch, that Tim was ready to walk in the path that Dennis set out after he had kind of blazed that trail.” Rupp, who will start as AD on Aug. 1, said he was excited about his new opportunity. “It’s a job I’ve wanted for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity,” he said. “I feel like I’ve got a lot of years under my belt and a broad range of experiences to bring into this position and hope to use all of them to maintain the quality, high-performance athletic teams we have here at South Medford High School.” That opportunity will also be a departure from traditional athletic director roles. Medford School District has made athletic director positions part time at South and North Medford high schools. The other 50 percent of each AD’s duties will be teaching classes, making the district one of the few at the Class 6A level to split up the position. In other news, Crowson said he and a committee that will include Rupp, district athletic director Amy Tiger and a few Panther coaches will begin interviews Tuesday for the boys basketball position vacated by Murphy. Three interviews are set, with two by Skype since those candidates are out of the area. “We’re going to take it one round at a time,” said Crowson. “We think that there’s a really good chance in this first round that we’ve got somebody who may be a fantastic fit, but if we need to go another direction or cast a bigger net, we will do that, too.” “We want to make sure we do our due diligence,” added Crowson, “that we find the right person for our program.” Reach reporter Kris Henry at 541-776-4488, [email protected], www.facebook.com/krishenryMT or www.twitter.com/Kris_Henry By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Follow @@Kris_Henry Posted May. 27, 2016 at 6:01 PM Updated May 27, 2016 at 10:47 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction Schedules & Events --> Recent Scores --> Prep Notebook Kris Henry Challengers make it back on top in softball Winning the Southern Cascade League title seemed like a pretty bold goal this spring considering the recent history of the Cascade Christian...
