Left turn on red is all right I am so confused. Today, as in the past few months, I have seen drivers turn left onto a one-way street from a two-way street on a red light. I know that it is OK to turn left from a one-way street to another one-way street, but I did not think it was OK from a two-way street. So far no one has been pulled over by Medford's finest, but I didn't want to chance it myself until I hear if it is OK. -- Maryl C., Jacksonville You may go ahead and do it, Maryl, but Medford police advise that you do it carefully. Lt. Mike Moran, who commands the department's patrol division, says it's perfectly legal to turn left from a two-way street onto a one-way street against a red light, but he adds, "you are responsible for making absolutely sure that you yield to all appropriate vehicles." That means that if there is an accident, and it is determined that you made an unsafe movement with your vehicle ... well, we'll leave the rest up to your imagination. It never hurts to sit there until your light turns green if you're afraid it would be unsafe to turn on the red, Moran says. "If you're not sure, my advice is, don't do it." Lt. Tim George adds that such turns are illegal in California, which may be why you are confused. "I do it all the time," George says, "but I'm careful when I do it."
