LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, July 4 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 4, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Tonic is in danger The tonic is in the wrong bottle. Trump arouses yearning in freedom-loving people. Trump expresses unguarded thoughts, and the media howls "outrageous." Trump doesn't apologize. His disregard for political correctness and media approval tells us it is possible. We can think freely, say what we feel or know, and ignore the bawling and attempted intimidation by the media and privileged minorities. We can defy intimidation as the media twists everything we say into some kind of racism or hatred. Trump doesn't say what he needs to say to win votes. That may cost him (and us) the freedom he demonstrates. That is in extreme contrast with many opposing politicians who do not hesitate to be totally dishonest with promises to win our votes, while representing international corporations, not us. We could only wish such values came from a statesman whose history was consistent. The tonic of American values is in danger of being poured out as refuse, never to be recovered. Ira Edwards Medford It's about government Am I the only one that noticed that the article in the MT June 30 regarding the proposed ballot measure IP 28 to raise business taxes will increase government jobs by approximately 30,000 while losing approximately 38,200 public/private sector jobs? And that timeline is less than 10 years and as little as five years. What does this tell you about our revered state government officials? They don’t care about the private businesses and are totally focused on the increase in the size and scope of government. Unions love this initiative and its forecast as it means automatic increase in membership and therefore an increase in funds in their pockets. If you’re a young student in high school or college, forget majoring in anything that you may think you want, especially if you think you may want to remain in Oregon. Instead, focus on majors that will enable you to get that readily available government job. Or, you can go elsewhere where your talents and expertise will be appreciated — leaving Oregon with a huge government bureaucracy and less and less tax base. Can they try any harder to drive business out of Oregon? P. Moran Medford Shame on MT I'm a 79-year-old "newsaholic." I appreciate the local human interest stories and wide variety of subjects in the MT; however, in last week's "Our View," Cheers and jeers, you criticized your syndicated columnists for their near constant negative coverage of Donald Trump. Thank goodness for their expertise and dogged coverage. This election cycle, two no-good choices from either party, presents an extremely critical juncture in the history of our beloved country. Hillary's run is a "coronation of the inevitable." This has been her goal for decades. Some of Trump's wild ideas are good, but he lacks the integrity, foresight, honesty and intelligence to execute them. He's using his campaign to promote Trump golf courses, Trump Tower, Trump this, Trump that. He's lied about self-funding. He's loaning his campaign his money! He excoriates the press but adores the tens of millions of dollars in free publicity (reverse psychology). Your columnists predicted last summer he'd implode before Thanksgiving. Maybe their constant drumbeat will get through some thick skulls. Know what's boring and repetitious? CNN, MSNBC, FOX, yak yak. They need human interest stories, inspiring news. Electoral college? There should be a college exam to run for president! In my dreams ...
