Maybe it’s a quiet picnic spot, a historical site or a backcountry road; whatever the case, email us a 300- to 500-word story about it, plus directions and pictures if you have them, to Mail Tribune features editor Dave Smigelski at [email protected] . » Social News After we mentioned visiting Mill Creek Falls, a long-time Medford resident commented, “I pass it on the way to Diamond Lake and Crater Lake, but I’ve never been there.” This is an easy place to miss, but it’s well worth a visit. And you only need to commit a half day. A mere 41 miles from the intersection of I-5 and Crater Lake Highway, Prospect State Scenic Viewpoint (formerly known as Mill Creek Falls Scenic Area) is about a 50-minute drive up Highway 62 through Shady Cove and some of the prettiest scenery Oregon has to offer. Nearing Prospect, look for the signs for Mill Creek Falls and turn right onto Prospect Access Road for a half mile. At the stop sign, turn left, and in about a mile the parking area is on the right. Pull in and study the Mill Creek Scenic Area map in the parking lot. The trail is easy to follow, but there are no paper maps to take with you, and by studying this now you’ll know what to expect once you start. While most people would not find the trail to the overlook difficult, those with mobility issues may find the walk back a bit steep and the ground uneven. Otherwise, it’s a nice walk to some beautiful waterfalls. Along the way, notice the tree-identification signs — a silver pipe with green and white reflective tape and the name welded onto it. At the bottom of the hill, a sign identifies the falls to the right and boulders to the left. Make a right, and in less than 15 minutes from starting you’ll arrive at Mill Creek Falls viewpoint. Another 5 minutes farther down the path will take you to Barr Creek Falls viewpoint. There are a few rocks here you can climb on to sit and enjoy the view. As you head back, you again have the option to go to the boulders. This is definitely not for mobility-challenged individuals, as you are climbing on boulders to get close to the cascading Rogue River. No falls here, but plenty of beautiful Oregon scenery. Plan on spending about an hour and a half in this area to soak in all the area has to offer. When you leave the parking lot, turn right, and about a half mile down the road park on the north side of the bridge. Enjoy the cascading water on both sides of the bridge. If it’s a clear day you will have a beautiful view of Mount McLoughlin in the distance. Another quarter mile down the road takes you to the north parking area, where there is a vault toilet and the trailhead for Pearsony Falls. This is a nice half-day drive. Or make it longer and stop in the sleepy town of Shady Cove with its unique shops. From Medford you pass a few wineries along the way. If planning to stop, check ahead to make sure they are open.
