After six weeks of counts and recounts, the Jackson County Clerk's Office confirmed what was obvious: incumbent Sen. Bates was the winner. After six weeks of counts and recounts, the Jackson County Clerk's Office confirmed what was obvious: incumbent Sen. Bates was the winner. The Medford Democrat wound up defeating his Republican challenger by 282 votes, seven more than the margin when the first final tally was released. We also cheer the fact that Dotterrer will work as a legislative aide in Salem, because he brings good ideas and a sharp mind to the daunting task. Jeers: To the Oregon Republican Party, which not only insisted on a recount but intimated that mischief was afoot in the ballot count by Jackson County elections officials. That was baloney and everyone knew it, including Dotterrer, who found himself captive to the political whims of GOP handlers upstate. Jeers: While we're at it, more jeers for the upstate handlers in the Dotterrer campaign, who went negative in the final weeks of the race. They had a strong candidate in an election year in which close races often swung to the GOP side of the ledger. Did it occur to them that their smear campaign probably cost Dotterrer votes? Do the math: If it cost them 142 votes, it also may have cost them the election. Cheers: To the folks at Mortgage Express and Keller Williams Realty's Alba Group, who saw that the local Toys for Tots campaign was lagging and took up the cause, challenging each other and other businesses and individuals to step up in the charity's time of need and raising enough to buy 150 presents. Add a little holiday cheer to someone's life yourself, and donate toys for kids and teens at any Human Bean, US Bank, PremierWest or Subway location, at most local fire stations and at Toys "R" Us. Cheers: To the Ashland School District, for developing a reasonable plan to allow students and schools to celebrate the holidays. After a fiasco last year when a Christmas tree was taken down by a school principal because it may have represented a specific religious belief, the district created a committee to come up with a new plan. That plan allows Christmas to be celebrated with decorations, as long as other religious or cultural holidays are given equal time, the schools do not emphasize any religion over others and do not promote religion in any way. It may be aggravating to some that legal precedents have to be studied before kids can sing "White Christmas," but any district that ignores that reality does so at its own risk. Jeers: Call us old-fashioned, but we've got to hand out a jeer to state Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo and the Department of Education, which announced this week that it would allow students to use spell check on state writing tests. Sure, using spell check should be expected of any writer to provide a back-up, but isn't the idea of a well-rounded education to make the need for that back-up less likely? Educators everywhere are trying to bolster student test scores; this strikes us as an artificial way to achieve the result.
