Ashland (subject to change with snow conditions). Great for all skill levels. The group will cover 2 to 3 miles along groomed trails. A 10 AM carpool will leave from Ashland Outdoor Store at 10 a.m. and return by 2 p.m. Bring a pack with plenty of layers for cold weather, water and snacks. Poor road conditions or foul weather will cause postponement. KS Wild does not provide snowshoes to participants, but several places around the Rogue Valley rent snowshoes. Rogue Valley Audubon Society meeting Tuesday, Jan. 23: Daphne Fautin and Bob Buddemeier will present a program on the current state of our oceans, "The Oceans: Threats and Prospects," at the club's January meeting. REI, 85 Rossanley Drive, Medford, will hold a free class on rope skills focusing on advanced knots and hitches. The seminar is focused on rope, knot strength and knot applications. Some of the knots you will learn include the figure eight follow through, the bowline and a variety of hitches such as the auto block or prusik. If you want versatility and efficiency as a climber, understanding knots and hitches is a critical part of your study. KS Wild hike Saturday, Jan. 27: Kelsey Creek hike in the Marble Mountains in Klamath National Forest. Moderate difficulty hike along a creek, through old-growth forest on a historic trail. Approximate 1 hour and 45-minute drive to the trailhead. Participants should expect a gorgeous uphill hike into the mountains. Bring lunch, water, boots and layered clothing. Rain or shine (or snow!) Sterling Mine Ditch Trail work party Saturday, Jan. 27: Siskiyou Upland Trails Association will work on the section of the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail between the Tunnel Ridge and Little Applegate trailheads. The out-and-back hike will cover about four to five miles depending upon how far they get. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Buncom, corner of Sterling Creek Road and Little Applegate Road at 8:30 AM. The group will carpool/caravan to the trailhead. SUTA provides lunch. If you plan to attend, email [email protected] so they can plan the work party and food. Avalanche Awareness class Tuesday, Jan. 30: Whether you ski, snowshoe, snowboard or snowmobile, recognition of avalanche danger is an essential and potentially lifesaving skill. This free class introduces and explains where and why avalanches occur and provides a basic approach to managing risk. Learn to access local avalanche bulletins and weather reports, recognize basics signs of avalanche danger, and learn simple ways to help avoid danger. Rogue Valley Audubon Society Wednesday, Feb. 7: The Rogue Valley Audubon Society holds free bird walks at Agate Lake the first Wednesday of every month. The walks begin at 8:30 a.m. and end before noon. The slow-paced walk covers about 1.5 miles. Meet at the main parking area on the east side of the lake opposite the boat ramp. For details, see roguevalleyaudubon.org/ Cascade Foothills Bird Walk Thursday, Feb. 8: Look for winter raptors and other grassland birds at the city of Ashland Imperatrice property, in the Cascade foothills, with biologist Frank Lospalluto. American kestrels, red-tailed hawks, and northern harriers are common, but we may also see rough-legged hawks, other falcons and eagles. Rogue River Preserve Stewardship Day Saturday, Feb. 10: The group will pull invasive Scotch broom along the Rogue River near Eagle Point to help protect the biodiversity of the Rogue River Preserve. The group may also remove an old barbed-wire fence. After the community work party, eat your lunch along the river with the group. Siskiyou Velo Every Saturday: Brisk rides are for strong riders who want to ride in a paceline with occasional sprints and brisk climbs. Speeds are above 20 mph on flats and average of 15 to 18 mph overall. The route and starting point will vary — expect some climbing and, in fact, on most days, a lot. Riders should know how to make repairs. Riders are expected to review online and understand the planned route. The Brisk group is not a no-drop group, slower riders are discouraged. For details, call Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804. Every Saturday: Velo Melo meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph on flats with few, if any, pacelines. The routes may include some climbing, but these are usually limited to small rolling hills within the Bear Creek Valley. No one will be dropped. Contact Lisa Brill at [email protected]. Every Saturday: Velo Slo-Mos meet at various places to ride about 18 miles at an average of 10 mph over mostly flat terrain. We always stop for a cuppa along the route. Contact Phil Gagnon at 541-488-4289. Every Monday: Moderate to brisk rides along a fairly flat route from Phoenix to Jacksonville. Speeds are 18 to 20 mph on the flats and average around 15 to 19 mph overall. The route includes mostly lower volume roads without shoulders and some with moderate traffic and moderately wide shoulders. The exception is on OR 238 (Hanley Road), where there are no shoulders and the volumes are moderate. Call Ray Forsyth at 541-245-0312. Every Wednesday: This is a ride for experienced cyclists who enjoy riding at a moderate/brisk pace. Pacelines are common but not continuous; speeds are above 20 mph on flats and average of 15 to 18 mph overall. The route may vary but typically it goes through the orchards on the way to Oregon Mountain Roasting Company near East Barnett and North Phoenix Road (approximately 35 miles). The ride will almost always include a stop for coffee/espresso. Call Matt Walker at 541-261-4891.
