Lily Phad’s closure late last year eliminated that perk, which had set it apart from so many Asian establishments locally. But the change in operating hours is the most noteworthy difference between Lily Phad and its swiftly installed successor, Jasmine Thai Cuisine. The newest iteration of a Thai eatery at 318 E. Main St. doesn’t imitate only the floral motif in its name and logo. The look of Lily Phad is largely intact at Jasmine Thai, along with much of the menu. Specials written on the large board above the counter suggested more holdovers from Lily Phad. The spicy basil duck, for example, isn’t represented on every Thai menu locally. When I ordered it last summer, however, I had hoped for more spice and crispier poultry skin. Extra spicy preparation is an option, along with medium or mild, for many dishes on Jasmine’s menu. A quick glance at the lunch menu revealed plenty of typical fare at competitive prices, if not lower, than counterparts locally. I remarked that squid isn’t commonly offered at lunchtime, or for the same price as shrimp, $8.99. A combination of seafood costs $10.99 per dish. Tofu, chicken, pork or beef each run $7.99. Tofu is among my most frequent choices at Thai restaurants, even if I hadn’t been dining with a vegetarian who occasionally eats fish and shellfish. Although the squid didn’t tempt my friend’s appetite, she was game for shrimp. We agreed on the tofu in green curry, and the shrimp in Jasmine’s less-familiar “rama noodles,” with their description of a “tasty peanut sauce” as opposed to phad Thai’s topping of ground peanuts. Lunches are served with a choice of white or brown rice and an egg roll. I would have tacked on an appetizer but didn’t see any listed on Jasmine’s lunch menu and hesitated to request the full-length listing for dinner. There probably wouldn’t have been time to enjoy a starter, however, because our lunches fairly flew out of the kitchen, perhaps too quickly. A bit more time on the heat would have improved both plates of food. Each was attractive and savory, but their cool temperatures didn’t leave much time to linger over the flavors. I was pleased to see more vegetables in the curry than promised on the menu. Nicely cooked carrot slices and broccoli florets complemented the dish’s standard eggplant, bell pepper and bamboo shoots with silky tofu. Carrots and broccoli with still-tender shrimp also composed the rice-noodle dish, which did deliver a tasty sauce. The curry could carry more of a kick. But the coconut-milk broth was good enough to warrant sipping straight from the bowl, or soaking into rice, had the grain’s portion been a bit larger. We did sip cups of jasmine tea that the server attentively topped off several times. Jasmine’s tom yum soup, boasting chicken, shrimp and squid for $9.50, would be another good option for slurping on rainy spring days. Along with soup, headings on Jasmine’s dinner menu include appetizers, salad, noodle stir-fry, fried rice, curry offerings and house specials. Main courses are priced from $9.99 to $13.99. Jasmine Thai Cuisine is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
