Who was she, and what became of her? — Nick, via email That doomed British ocean liner torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Kinsale, Ireland, did include a girl with local ties by the name of Miss Dorothy Conner, who occupied cabin E-63 on that ship, and survived. We came across the Lusitania Resource online, a wiki and information hub with history, RMS Lusitania facts and passenger and crew biographies, including a hearty page about Miss Conner. She was born on Sept. 15, 1890 in New Albany, Indiana. She moved to Medford after graduating from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where her brother Boudinot was a successful orchardist in Jacksonville, and to be near her mother, Katharine. Dorothy and Katharine lived a carefree life in Medford, where they were active in social circles, and Dorothy danced with golfer and orchardist Chandler Egan. She earned a degree in first aid in 1915, and was traveling with her brother-in-law, Dr. Howard Fisher, who also happened to be brother of former US Secretary of the Interior Walter Fisher. She was headed to France to meet her sister, Julia Reckitt, and to assist the Red Cross as a nurse and help establish the Reckitt-Johnstone hospital in Paris with Dr. Fisher. In a 2012 Mail Tribune column, historian Bill Miller referenced the calm moment before the storm in her diary. "It's been such a dull, dreary, stupid trip," she wrote the morning prior to the catastrophe. "I can't help hoping that we'll get some kind of thrill going up the channel." When she returned to the United States in October 1915, Boudinot hired lawyer Lincoln McCormick of the legal team of Hunt, Hill and Betts, the firm spearheading legal work for the "Lusitania Survivors Committee." She was awarded $15,801.17 in 1924 for pain and suffering caused by the experience. She married naval officer Lieutenant Greene Williams Dugger in 1923, and had two children, John and Mary Anne. In 1941, she was widowed while living in Honolulu due to an illness Lt. Dugger contracted. By 1952, her son John was a naval attache, allowing her to travel to Vietnam, Finland, England and other places. She died on Aug. 9, 1967 at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland.
