By Vickie Aldous February 01. 2016 1:34PM Medford man sentenced in stabbing case Hank David Nevarez Hank David Nevarez was sentenced Monday to five years and 10 months in prison for his role in a Medford stabbing — much of which was captured by surveillance cameras at nearby businesses. Nevarez, 48, was sentenced after a jury found him guilty Jan. 20 of second-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault, third-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. "You'd probably have been convicted if someone just showed the video," Jackson County Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia said. Nevarez and co-defendant Leila Ruth Carlson, 43, — who is scheduled to go to trial March 16 — were accused of stalking and attacking Jordan Dale Silva Nov. 30, 2015, outside a Medford Albertsons store on West Main Street. During Nevarez's one-day trial, the Jackson County District Attorney's Office showed six videos taken by three businesses in the area, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz. The videos showed Nevarez, who was in front of a Purple Parrot outlet, become extremely agitated when he saw Silva drive by. Nevarez then went inside the Purple Parrot to get Carlson and they went to Albertsons. Nevarez is seen peering down an Albertsons' aisle toward Silva and is later seen outside the store, stalking Silva. The figures in a video of the actual attack are quite small and the action is not entirely clear, Markiewicz said. According to police accounts, Silva got into a vehicle at Albertsons and was followed by Nevarez and Carlson in a vehicle. All three got out, and Silva said he saw the pair were armed with knives. He was stuck in the leg. Silva approached a police squad car on North Ross Lane and reported he had been stabbed. Police identified the suspects and surrounded their home in the 900 block of Murray Avenue in Medford. The pair refused to come out, and a SWAT team was called in. After getting a warrant, police entered the house and subdued Nevarez and Carlson with stun guns, police said. Markiewicz said multiple knives were recovered from the house. The motive for the stabbing attack on Silva remains unclear, according to court testimony. Nevarez was previously convicted for an attack that resulted in great bodily injury in California, then was convicted of possessing a weapon while he was an inmate in prison, according to court testimony. He and Carlson were arrested for allegedly working together to steal and pawn more than $20,000 in property in 2013 in Jackson County, but the case was dismissed after prosecutors said an essential witness could not be found. In Jackson County, Carlson was convicted of first-degree theft in 2005, delivery of methamphetamine in 2007, identity theft and fraudulent use of a credit card in 2011 and methamphetamine possession in 2013.
