The Black Tornado (4-1) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and rode the arms of three different pitchers to claim a 2-1 victory over South Medford at Fagone Field in nonconference play. South Medford pitcher Jen Mendenhall held North to four hits, while the trio of Mallorie Hoover, Erica Sanders and Kendra Strahm limited the Panther bats to just two hits. "That’s how it’s going to be," said North Medford coach Brent Barry, referring to the style of play expected in the Southern Oregon Conference. "It was a good win for us. (South) had been rolling on all cylinders coming in." The loss snapped South Medford’s 10-game winning streak to start the season. During the season-opening run, the Panthers had outscored opponents 55-4. Advertisement North freshman Tara Sikes tied the game at 1-all in the sixth inning, coming home on a sacrifice fly by Darcy Cordell. In the seventh, Stephanie Haskett walked with one out and was sacrificed to second. She came home with the game-winner when the ball scooted free from the South Medford catcher and to the backstop. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Hoover when Bethany Stousland singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw to third trying to cut down a steal attempt. Strahm recorded the victory, her second against one loss, while Mendenhall fell to 2-1 with the defeat.
