OREGON LEGISLATURE Bill keeping guns from domestic abusers clears Oregon House Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Jun. 9, 2015 at 5:42 PM By The Associated Press Posted Jun. 9, 2015 at 5:42 PM » Social News SALEM — A bill making it easier for local law enforcement officials to confiscate firearms from convicted domestic abusers and people under restraining orders has cleared the Legislature. Oregon House lawmakers gave bipartisan support to a measure echoing a federal law that bars people from keeping their firearms if they've been convicted of domestic violence. The bill passed 51-8 on Tuesday and heads to the governor. Supporters argue there aren't enough federal agents in the state to actively enforce the federal version of the law. They say the measure would give local police more authority to uphold the law. But critics say this could put police in danger if they're sent out to confiscate firearms. They also questioned whether the proposal was necessary since there's already existing federal legislation.
