Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 9, 2006 OSP office to add evidence tech The position, authorized by the E-board, will free one local trooper for patrol duty By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune Oregon State Police’s Central Point office will benefit from the addition of an evidence technician position that will free at least one more trooper for patrol. The office is one of nine across the state that will get extra help in dealing with the large amounts of evidence collected by troopers every year, OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said. Evidence technicians’ primary jobs are ensuring that evidence and property are properly packaged, stored and lawfully disposed of. They also prepare evidence for submission to the crime laboratories and courts. "Hiring these evidence technicians will put troopers back onto our highways, provide certainty for the Oregon State Police and safety to citizens of Oregon," Governor Ted Kulongoski said in a news release. During the 2001-03 biennium, the Legislature failed to approve enough money to maintain the evidence technician program. The result was troopers having to be taken off patrol to help manage evidence, OSP officials said. The state Legislature’s interim funding body, the so-called E-Board, recently approved emergency funding to restore the technician positions. Advertisement Other offices that will receive an evidence technician are Astoria, Albany, Coos Bay, Bend, Pendleton, Portland, Springfield and Salem. OSP is now accepting applications for the positions. The deadline to apply is Feb. 20. All applicants will be subjected to a computerized criminal history and Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a thorough background investigation. Preference will be given to applicants with law enforcement experience. To apply, submit a completed State of Oregon Employment form PD 100. This form may be obtained from any local office of the Oregon Employment Department or most state agency personnel offices. The application may be mailed to: Department of State Police, Attn.
