It was early this morning, and the 19-year-old heard his bedroom window crack across the hall from the bathroom. He turned to investigate the source of the sound and saw flames glowing through the blinds. "Behind my blinds I could see this orange aura, and so immediately I knew it was a fire," Huynh said. "That's when I went to go notify my parents to get them out of the house." By the time the two-alarm fire was out, it had wrought heavy damage to Huynh's home and the home next door. The incident packed a neighborhood street with fire trucks for several hours. Huynh, his parents, and the family's two dogs made it out safely, as did the two residents in the damaged home next door. "We were kind of all in a panic and shocked, because we had no idea what was going on at first," Huynh said. "But we got everybody out." The blaze was first reported at 12:14 a.m. in the 2000 block of Brookdale Drive, according to emergency dispatch logs. Fire officials said it was first reported as a grass fire in an area between the two structures. "When (crews) arrived, there was an actual structure fire," said Jackson County Fire District 3 spokeswoman Ashley Lara. "There was some spread to wildland, but very minimal. There were significant flames and smoke coming from the structure." The incident was upgraded to a second alarm at about 12:30 a.m. Fire District 3 and Medford Fire-Rescue responded with six engines total, manned by about 20 fire personnel. Central Point police also responded to assist at the scene. "It was pretty packed there. They just lined the road," Lara said. No other homes required evacuation, with the flames very centralized between the two structures, Lara added. Huynh's home, where officials believe the fire originated, suffered severe damage, including a fully collapsed roof. The two-story home next door also suffered heavy damage, mostly on the second story, including a partial roof collapse, officials said. Huynh said he has lived in the home for more than 10 years, since he was in third grade. "It's really weird," he said. "I would have never thought that my house would burn down." Huynh said he and his family will stay with a friend until they can figure out their next move. They were able to salvage some of their property from the burned structure, but a full extent of what was damaged was still being figured out Friday.
