Feb. 5, 1916 A COMMUNITY LOSS The untimely death of William Ira Vawter comes as a blow to the community and robs Medford and southern Oregon of one of their best assets at a time the country can ill afford to lose such a man. Coming to Medford as a young man in village days, Mr. Vawter saw its opportunities and possibilities and became one of its leading citizens and principal community builders. In the intervening years he has been active in all lines of human endeavor. Progressive, enterprising, farsighted, he has perhaps contributed more to development than any of our citizens. He was in the van of every betterment effort, giving freely of time and money in advancing the best interests of southern Oregon. Though cut off in the prime of life, with wide fields of opportunity opening before him, with statewide appreciation of his efforts and recognition of his service and ability, with the future holding much for him, Mr. Vawter has left an enviable record that should be an inspiration to youth. That he was successful in all he undertook is a tribute not only to his talents, but to his ceaseless energy — for he was probably the hardest worker in the community. The sympathy of all southern Oregon goes out to his bereaved family, for their loss is also the state's loss. SOCIETY Among the social events of Oak Grove district was a luncheon given to compliment Mrs. W. Frederick at the home of Mrs. August Lawrentz. The afternoon was most enjoyably spent with conversation and music, after which a three-course luncheon was served. The guests then departed, thanking the hostess for the pleasant time. Those present were: Mrs. J. W. Snider, Mrs. W. W. Knipps, Mrs. W. Frederick, Mrs. A. W. Johnston, Mrs. August Lawrentz, Miss Laura Lawrentz and Miss Sarah Johnston. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Honey of Portland, formerly of Medford, are visiting here for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Honey were dinner guests of Mrs. R. C. Minear Tuesday evening at her home on North Ivy street.
