Central Point moves to ban psilocybin By Buffy Pollock Updated: Jul 15, 2022 01:25 PM A A Central Point City Council voted unanimously Thursday to ask voters in the city to ban psilocybin service centers and the manufacture of psilocybin products inside city limits. With election filing deadlines looming for the November ballot, the ordinance was adopted with an emergency clause, meaning the ordinance was approved after just one reading. Minimal discussion was held before the decision. City Manager Chris Clayton said the council passed a resolution earlier this year, but the action taken Thursday was recommended by the League of Oregon Cities. “In our circumstances, we were actually the first ones to go with this. It’s just that we did it via resolution, and then League of Oregon Cities came out with a recommended ordinance law, and our city attorney felt the (LOC) route was more bulletproof,” Clayton said. “The big thing on this one is the wording. It can get confusing, so you have to be careful. … You want to be sure you’re writing it in a neutral position so people can make up their own minds. Sometimes ballot titles can be confusing, so you want to make sure voters understand what they’re voting for.” When Oregon voters passed the measure to approve psilocybin use in 2020, Central Point voted 60-40 against the measure.
