The senior right-hander frustrated another top Skyline Conference baseball opponent Tuesday, firing a two-hitter in the Chieftains’ 2-1 victory over Phoenix. "He gave up two infield singles and that was it," said Rogue River coach John White. "He always seems to pitch well in big games for us." League-leading and sixth-ranked Rogue River (17-2, 11-1 Skyline) managed only five hits against Pirates hurler Chad Walker, but it got a solo home run from Spencer Frantz in the sixth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. "We just seem to find a way to get it done, and we have been all year," said White. "We’ve been winning the close games, and that’s what it takes to contend for a league title." Advertisement Phoenix (12-6, 8-4 Skyline), which remained in third place in conference, dropped its third consecutive one-run game to the Chieftains. Walker has now been on the losing end of two of them. "This is the second 2-1 game between Richardson and Walker," said White. "I thought (Walker) was pretty remarkable. He changed speeds on us really well and kept the ball down." Richardson improved to 7-1, while Frantz had a pair of hits to lead the Chieftains. The win kept Rogue River a half game ahead of second-place and top-ranked Henley. The two teams meet in a doubleheader showdown Saturday in Klamath Falls. "The kids feel pretty good about this win," said White. "It was a pretty important game because it puts us in a really good position as far as the playoffs are concerned." Card, who has a scholarship to play at Oregon State, also got plenty of help from his teammates. Henley’s Jimmy Mastroianni had two hits and three RBIs, and James Nygren added two runs and two RBIs. Also for the Hornets, Kelley Shannon had two runs and an RBI and Colin Stock a double.
