South holds off Ashland in SOC opener ASHLAND - South Medford had to overcome an inspired performance from Ashland freshman point guard Alysse Carlson in its Southern Oregon Conference season-opening girls basketball game Friday. Despite a career-high 19 points from Carlson, the Panthers prevailed 57-47 at the Grizzlies' gym. "When Carlson is playing well, they will be tough," South Medford coach Andrea Jaime said. "But our kids finished the game real well." South Medford countered with a freshman of its own - guard Katie Singler, who provided 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guards Kirsten Gillingham and Whitney Grant provided the Panthers good balance. Gillingham also produced a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Grant tossed in 13 points and dished out five assists. "She (Grants) distributed the ball well and kept control of the game," said Jaime. The Panthers pulled down 38 rebounds, with 15 coming on the offensive end. South Medford did not falter from the Grizzlies' pressure late in the game. "We beat their press and got some easy baskets at the end," said Jaime. The Grizzlies received a 16-point, 12-rebound effort from junior post Marla Morin. Ashland first-year coach Stefani Santos was displeased with some of the Grizzlies decisions. "We turned the ball over a little too much," said Santos. "When things got close we panicked and rushed."
