The energetic Warriors (9-6, 5-2 Cascade Conference) came back from a 2-games-to-1 deficit and pulled within a half game of the Raiders (7-3, 5-1 Cascade) and Oregon Tech for the conference lead with the 22-30, 30-28, 21-30, 30-28, 15-8 triumph. Twin 21-kill efforts by outside hitters Liz Howe and former North Medford High standout Kendra Mitchell helped WBC beat Southern in Ashland for the first time since 1997 and for the first time in the series in seven matches. The loss ended SOU’s season win streak at five matches. Advertisement "Hopefully, we learned a valuable lesson about letting teams back into matches and losing momentum," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "Once you lose momentum, it's tough to get it back." After losing Game 3, Western never trailed again. The Warriors raced to a 21-11 bulge in Game 4, then endured a Raider rally that tied the score at 25-all. WBC then stormed to an 11-3 advantage in the finale and needed only four kills to overcome error-prone SOU. Despite only the school's sixth home defeat spanning six seasons, the Raiders received solid offensive efforts from senior all-stars Kristina Matchett (25 kills) and Lindsey Aitchison (18 kills), while junior Kristin Ferris led all players with 22 digs and contributed 13 kills. WBC hit .191 for the match and held the Raiders to an .085 attack percentage in the final two games and .180 overall. A team-best 20 by libero Jamie Ruda led four Warrior players in double-digits for digs. "Western's defense was outstanding, and that's what got them back into the match," Elliott said. "We had trouble getting a ball to the floor later on." Raider setter Jamie McCreary accumulated a career-high 64 assists, while freshman Donica Anderson compiled 37 in relief of sophomore starter Whitney Brookins. Southern hosts Concordia at 4 p.m. Saturday; WBC takes on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls.
