Mustangs reduce first-place crowd MURPHY -- Hidden Valley got its fastbreak in gear in the second half and steamrolled Illinois Valley 78-60 in Skyline Conference boys basketball Tuesday night. The Hidden Valley victory broke a three-way first-place tie with Illinois Valley and Henley. Hidden Valley remained deadlocked for first at 5-1. The Mustangs (10-5, 5-1 Sky) play at Henley on Friday. "We were ready," Hidden Valley coach Ken Lathen said. "This is one of our most complete games. We played really good defense, especially as the game wore on and our rebounding helped our fastbreak get going." Mustang junior wing Kevin Ries led four Mustang players in double figures. Ries had 22 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. "(Ries is) a hustler," said Lathen. "He had a great game because he had some outstanding feeds from (Willy) Isley and (Dereck) Horning." The Mustangs led 53-51 entering the final period, but outscored the Cougars 25-9 to break it open. Ries had nine points in the quarter. Hidden Valley received important contributions from Caleb Thomas (14 points, 11 rebounds), Horning (14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) and Isley (14 points, 9 assists). "This was a game we had to have," said Lathen. "You've got to win every conference home game. This is where our focus is." Bartels, who had averaged 30 points per game in his previous three outings, got nearly half of his points on a 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Kevin Jeffers scored 12 for Phoenix, Landon Rhodes nine and Cody Rombach eight. For Rogue River, Jeff Jentzsch and Jason Luchterhand combined for 30 points. Henley knocked down 14 3-pointers, including nine in the first half en route to a 50-29 lead at the break. The Hornets had five players in double figures, with Cunningham, Michael Nunes and Travis Boshuizen each scoring 17 points. Henley point guard Cunningham added four blocked shots.
