Mustangs' defeat of Rogue River proves costly MURPHY - Hidden Valley defeated Rogue River earlier in the season, but the win proved costly. The Mustangs lost second-team all-District 6 sweeper Trevor Nowak to an injury in the first game to the Chieftains. Hidden Valley came out with a purpose against Rogue River Thursday and recorded its eighth shutout of season, 5-0. The Mustangs and Phoenix are tied at 11-1 on top of the District 6 standings. "It was our most complete game of the year," Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal said. "We were very focused." Mo Arteaga scored a goal and assisted on two others for Hidden Valley. "Mo played like a man possessed," said Seal. "He was all over the field for us." Dillon Borta and Darin McGlothlin added first-half goals, while Rem Evert and Irie Spann capped the second-half scoring. Hidden Valley all-state goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel started the game but was removed before the first half ended because of an injury and didn't return. VanderStoel hurt his ankle playing for the Mustangs' football team in last week's loss to North Valley. Seal doesn't plan to put VanderStoel back in the lineup until the state playoffs. MAZAMA 1, ST. MARY'S 0 - At Klamath Falls, Ricardo Camargo provided Mazama with the game-winning goal in a District 6 contest. Camargo found the net in the 38th minute. Vikings sweeper Greg Murdock helped preserve the lead with a solid defensive effort. Goalkeeper Josh Herzseltd-Kantarth made seven saves and snuffed out two potential scores in the second half off the foot of the Crusaders' Daniel Pires. Girls ST. MARY'S 1, MAZAMA 0, OT - St. Mary's leading-scorer, Emily Smith, put in the winning goal in the 94th minute. Smith capitalized on an opportunity close to the net when Mazama goalkeeper Sara Sheets couldn't control a cross by Lauren Huizinga four minutes into the second 10-minute overtime period. The Crusaders (8-1-1, 5-1 District 6) dominated most of the possession, limiting the Vikings to just one shot. HENLEY 1, NORTH VALLEY 0 , shootout - At Klamath Falls, Henley's seventh shooter, Tara Campbell, scored the winning goal. After two 10-minute overtime periods that yielded no goals, the Hornets and Knights went through the first five shooters tied at 1-all. HIDDEN VALLEY 5, ROGUE RIVER 1 - At Murphy, five different Mustangs scored in leading Hidden Valley to the District 6 win. Allison Elledge got the Mustangs on the board in the 23rd minute, and Ashley Traina bumped the lead up to 2-0 three minutes before halftime. Rogue River cut into the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick by Cathryn Smith. Shae Ford provided the game's highlight in the 64th minute with a header to herself over a Rogue River defender and subsequent volley into the net. Anna Hoone and Nina Jaramillo closed out the scoring for Hidden Valley (4-6-1 overall, 3-3 Dist. 6).
