No simple solutions for traffic Most local traffic, including trucks, going north on Interstate 5 from Highway 62 take the Vilas Road cutoff to the Central Point interchange. Why doesn't the state erect a "to I-5" sign at the Vilas Road intersection? This would direct tourist and other traffic that route and reduce congestion at the north Medford interchange. -- Murrey D., Central Point The Central Point interchange may look like a good direction to route traffic right now, Murrey, but the folks at the Oregon Department of Transportation fear that won't be the case for long. Widening of Vilas Road, possible realignment of Highway 62 and a number of commercial developments planned near the Central Point interchange will combine to give that intersection all the traffic it can handle in coming years, said Alex Georgevitch, development review coordinator for the Oregon Department of Transportation. Some traffic experts predict it's on its way to becoming as clogged as Medford's south freeway interchange. "To put those signs up now would not be a good thing," Georgevitch said. "Now is not a good time to even consider rerouting traffic." Not that Georgevitch won't put your suggestion to good use. He said the concept has been suggested to a team studying possible solutions to Highway 62 traffic problems, and in the future, a sign redirecting southbound Highway 62 traffic may make sense.
