SOC boys basketball Cold Comets ambushed by Mazama CENTRAL POINT -- Though it now resides in the Class 3A ranks, the Mazama High boys basketball team reminded Crater on Friday night that it wasn't long ago the Vikings were Southern Oregon Conference compatriots. Troy Fast poured in 17 points and Kyle Michelis added 14 as the Vikings' conquered the Comets, 59-54, in non-league action. Fast, Michelis and Gunner Zahler, who added 12 points, helped Mazama jump to a 34-24 halftime lead. "(Mazama) played really good team basketball," said Crater coach Matt Meunier, whose team fell to 1-1. "We just played like individuals." Spurred by Mike Jacobs' game-high 23 points, the Comets cut the deficit to five points at the end of the third period, but it wasn't enough as Mazama matched Crater every step of the way in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. "When you shoot poorly you have to do team things," said Meunier, whose club shot a lackluster 21-of-59 from the floor. "We just weren't capable of playing team basketball tonight." Matt Brown was the other bright spot for Crater, posting 17 points. The Comets have a week off to think about cohesiveness before traveling to North Bend Friday to take on the Bulldogs in another non-league tilt. SOUTH MEDFORD 62, MOUNTAIN VIEW 46 -- At Bend, returning lettermen Graham Foster and Steve Hilgendorf both posted double-doubles as defending Southern Oregon Conference champion South Medford won its non-conference season opener. Foster, a 6-4 post, scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while point guard Hilgendorf added 11 points and 11 assists. The Panthers trailed 6-0 but outscored the Coungars 11-4 to take a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter. South moved out to a 29-19 halftime margin. Junior wing Brian Hickey led South with 14 points and post Nick Decker contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. David Husel added 15 points for North, including 13 in the second half, while Travis Hinkle contributed 10 points and nine rebounds despite being in foul trouble most of the night. Defense was a decisive factor for the Black Tornado in their 23-10 fourth-period run, holding Bend without a basket until the 3:42 mark of the period.
