Phoenix girls drop pivotal game PHOENIX Entering Tuesday nights game against Mazama, Phoenix still had a chance to secure second in the Skyline Conference girls basketball race and gain a home conference playoff game. But after a 50-32 loss to the Vikings, the Pirates may end up tied for fourth with Lakeview and have to open the playoffs on the road against the Honkers next Tuesday. Mazama and North Valley are tied for second at 9-4 and the two schools meet Friday at Mazama in the conference regular-season finale. Phoenix plays at Illinois Valley in its regular-season closer. The Pirates (10-10, 7-6 Skyline) got off to a poor start, trailed by 11 at halftime and never mounted a serious threat in the second half. "We could never get in the flow of anything," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "It was just a rough night." Phoenix shot just 11-for-50 (.220) from the field, was outrebounded 46-34 and committed 24 turnovers. "We couldnt catch a break early when it still wasnt out of reach," said Walker. "They had a lot of second chances and got fouled on some of them which sent them to the line." Mazama attempted 32 free throws, converting on 14, while Phoenix was 6-of-15 from the line. Senior guard Marcy Burk paced the Vikings with 14 points, while sophomore forward Krystal Lawrence added 10.
