Eyez on Brimmer dashes tough QH field By Dan Guthrie Jul 01, 2012 12:00 AM A A GRANTS PASS — In the $6,100 AQHA Grants Pass Bonus Challenge, Eyez on Brimmer powered to the front on the outside and took the 350-yard dash in 17.64 seconds Saturday at Grants Pass Downs. Left in the gray gelding's wake were Hannibal Lector and Snip N Dale, the former and present record-holders for the distance. Tim Neal, who has a fistful of seconds, rode Eyez on Brimmer to victory. "I told Tim to keep him picked up and he'd win," said trainer Benito Curiel, who has been racing at Sun Downs in Kennewick, Wash., where he took second in the $26,750 Pot O'Gold Futurity in May. Swiss Ace, ridden by Hugo Herrera, won the second feature of the day, the $3,300 Wheeler Toyota Sprint. It was one of four wins for Herrera; he now leads all jockeys with eight wins. In other races: In his first race, Noballstwostrikes ran away from the field. Owned and trained by David and Tony, the big gelding was ridden by Jose Guerrero, who now has six wins. Oxman overcame the heavy soil by the rail to win for Portland Meadows' leading quarter horse trainer, Hector Magallanes, who has two horses in the Firecracker Futurity and a budding star in this 4-year-old black gelding. Jockey Troy Stillwell told Magallanes that Oxman was struggling in the deep dirt; even so, he ran 350 yards in 17.81 seconds. Veteran trainer Don Young was having second thoughts about Shame on Rosie, who'd won three stakes races at Portland. "I just told my wife we should put her out in the pasture for a year and let her eat grass and be a horse," he said. Rosie then revved up for a 51/2-furlong race and was narrowly defeated by Sandi's Speed Trap, ridden by Tad Skaggs and trained by Bob Beckner. "She'd have won at 6 furlongs," Young concluded. The sometimes rainy day started with a small crowd, possibly because of the change back to a 1 p.m. post time, but eventually the fans showed up. Today should bring some blue sky.
