Meanwhile, in the Class 4A meet at the same site, Ashland’s Arron Nelson was the only Southern Oregon Conference swimmer to make the finals, barely doing so in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Preliminaries were Friday. All finals are today. The top six in each event make the finals, while the next six advance to the consolation finals. The Pirate boys set two relay records, including one that earned the quartet the top seed in today’s finals. Advertisement The 200 freestyle relay, with newcomer Jeff Stone in the rotation, knocked two seconds off its previous best time and clocked 1:34.53. The old school mark, set last year, was 1:35.56. "They swam out of their minds," said Phoenix coach Jim Heath of Stone, Dino Rossi, Stephen Duncan and Justin Heath, son of the coach. "They just swam absolutely perfect today. I’m anxious to see if we can keep them on that same focus tomorrow." The Pirates out-touched the No. 1-seeded team entering the prelims, Newport, by two-tenths of a second. "It’ll be very, very close tomorrow. We were right next to the No. 1 seed and touched them out by about the length of a hand." Another boys record fell when the same group went 3:31.43 in the 400 free relay to gain the No. 2 seed. It beat the old mark of 3:32.24 set in 2003. Two Pirate girls marks also fell. The 200 free relay of Kelsey Nelson, Joy Nelson, Jessica Porter and Brenna Moran went 1:51.20, breaking the mark it set at district last week of 1:52.67. It finished 10th and will be in today’s consolation finals. On the lead leg of that relay, Kelsey Nelson broke the 50-yard free record, going 26.37 to better her own mark earlier this year of 26.50. Stone and Rossi each made it to the finals — the top six — despite being seeded much lower. Stone, seeded 10th in the 50 free, clocked 23.47 for the third-best time in the prelims. Rossi, 11th in the 100 free going in, turned in the fifth-best time of 52.91. "We wanted to be in the top five," said Jim Heath, who doped out the prelim results and noted the Pirates would finish third if the finals went to form. The top four teams earn trophies. "That’s one of the little carrots we hang out there and go, ‘Come on guys, keep your focus,’" he said. Also for the Phoenix boys, Justin Heath was second in the 500 free in 5:08.59 and fourth in the 200 free in 1:52.12; Stone was fifth in the 100 back in 59.52; and Duncan was ninth in the 200 free in 2:01.87 and 11th in the 50 free in 24.56. For the Pirate girls, Kelsey Nelson made the finals in the 200 free, placing sixth in 2:05.62, but just missed in the 500 free, taking seventh in 5:42.99. Joy Nelson was 12th in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.64, and Maggie Morefield was 12th in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.51. The Pirates’ 200 individual medley relay of Morefield, Moran and the two Nelsons was 10th in 2:08.87. In the 4A meet, Nelson, the top seed in the 50 free, clocked 21.97 to place sixth in the prelims. He entered as the top seed. He also was sixth in the 100 free with a time of 48.91. Ashland had three relays entered. The 200 free relay of Travis Bishop, Andrew DelCarlo, Nathan Jessop and Nelson made the consolation finals with an 11th-place 1:33.26. Bishop, Jessop and Nelson swam on the 400 free relay with Geoff Berteau and also placed 11th in 3:25.76. The 200 medley relay of Caleb Salmond, Bishop, Berteau and Jessop was 16th in 1:48.20. In other boys events, North Medford’s Tolga Tokman was 16th in the 100 butterfly in 58.97 and 17th in the 500 free in 5:22.00; Salmond was 17th in the 100 backstroke in 59.10; and Crater’s Nicholas Janssen was 17th in the 200 free in 2:03.00. For the girls, Ashland’s Michelle Smith was 17th in the 100 free in 57.47; South Medford’s Nancy Hawley was 18th in both the 50 free (25.73) and the 500 free (5:38.60); and Ashland’s Ashley Roda was 18th in the 200 free in 2:07.61.
