The duo raced through its first three matches on Day 1 of doubles play, all in straight sets, and will take on unseeded Jessica Baker and Justine Bowen-Jones of Ashland in the semifinals at 10 a.m. today. In singles, Roseburg’s Becky Correll advanced with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Grant’s Julia Strang, but fellow Southern Oregon Conference competitor Kayla Moyse of Ashland dropped her first match, 6-0, 6-0, to Reynolds’ Emily Kirchem. The Black Tornado doubles tandem’s biggest challenge came in the quarterfinals where they earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory against No. 7 Katie Branam and Kate McGuire of Lakeridge. Advertisement Branam put the Pacers in front 2-1 early in the match, sending a perfect lob into the backcourt to force an errant return. Lakeridge maintained its slim lead until North Medford charged back late in the set, winning the last three games. "They were hitting some good shots, but we just needed to be patient and keep our focus," Chaney said. North Medford took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second set, controlling action at the net to build the advantage. On one point, both Black Tornado players got to the net and fired a series of overheads that put Lakeridge on the retreat. Finally, the Pacers sent a high lob over the net and Leever wound up for a big hit before letting up at the last moment and sending a soft winner into the front court. "When we can both get up and cover the net, it really takes away a lot of their shots," Leever said. "We just didn’t give them much to go for." Lakeridge battled back to close the gap to 3-2, but once again North Medford pulled away to win the last three games of the match. Black Tornado teammates McKenzie Hilmer and Lauren Wilson won their first two matches before falling out of contention 7-6, 6-0 against No. 3 Janae King and Lindsay Wiechert of Churchill. Hilmer and Wilson, the No. 5 seed, highlighted their day with a 6-1, 7-5 second-round win against Monica Murray and Laura Pazourek of Lakeridge. After cruising easily through the first set, the North Medford pair trailed for most of the second. Lakeridge appeared ready to force a deciding set after taking a 4-2 lead, but North Medford stormed back for a 7-5 close-out. "They were sending us a lot of short balls, and when I see something I can attack, I go for it," Wilson said.
