North downs Roseburg in final seconds Tuesday Jan 24, 2017 at 2:00 AM Jan 24, 2017 at 11:05 PM ROSEBURG — Brad Allen was in the right position at the right time for the North Medford boys basketball team Tuesday night. Allen’s putback basket with two seconds left gave the fourth-ranked Black Tornado a 42-40 victory over Roseburg in Southwest Conference action and extended North’s winning streak to 11. With the game tied 40-all, Roseburg (4-11, 1-4 SWC) had the ball with 55 seconds left, but North forced a turnover with 38 seconds to go. After a timeout, junior guard Quinton Rumrey got a clear look from long range but shot an airball. Fortunately, Allen cleaned up the miss with the winning basket. Forcing Roseburg into 20 turnovers was a key factor in the victory. “The big difference was turnovers,” said Plankenhorn. “It was one of those nights we couldn’t make a shot. But we forced enough turnovers to stay in contact.” North Medford (13-4, 5-0) shot just 16-for-47 (34 percent) from the field. Allen had 10 rebounds to go with eight points and Kaison Faust led North with 10 points and five steals. Veteran coach Plankenhorn knows from experience there are no easy wins on the road in the SWC. “One thing about our league every game on the road is a chore,” said Plankenhorn. “We’ve lost some of these games up here. The cold-shooting Panthers (5-11, 0-5 SWC) trailed 22-19 at halftime but managed just 9-for-27 shooting from the field after intermission Kaleb Franklin scored eight of his 10 points in the second half before fouling out late in the game. Taylor Phillips tossed in 16 points for Grants Pass (4-12, 1-4) and Tyler Rund added 13. Rajagopal ended the game with 21 points and four steals. Payton Dickinson scored 14 points for Triad, which trailed 29-28 at halftime. Joe Johnson chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders (8-10). ST. The Red Tail Hawks (11-4, 4-2 MVL) led by two points at halftime but outscored Prospect (4-12, 2-6) 18-2 in the third quarter. Trevor Haugen contributed 17 points and nine rebounds and Nathaniel James added 13 points for RVA. Jarred Gaines scored 10 points for Prospect.
