The Crater and South Medford girls basketball teams combined for 51 turnovers, mostly unforced, during the Comets’ 57-44 victory on Friday at the Adidas-Laker Interstate Shootout. Crater plays Central Catholic today at 11:30 a.m. Erin Kinney scored 12 points and Whitney Black added 11 as Crater (5-3) took advantage of 31 giveaways by the Panthers. "The game was very sloppy on both sides," said Crater coach Scott Dippel. "When you play a conference opponent in a non-conference game, it tends to get pretty sloppy." The Comets used a 16-8 surge in the third quarter to extend on a three-point half-time lead. Kinney had three of her four steals and Black converted on a pair of baskets to key the run. "We gave them a lot of free throws towards the end of the second quarter," said Dippel. "When you give up only two field goals but they’re making up the deficit, it’s a little discouraging. "We made some adjustments (in the third quarter), and our defensive intensity was a lot better." Katie Singler had 18 points and Teri Silva added 10 to lead the Panthers, who stayed within 10 points of Crater in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get any closer. Kerstin Mellbye had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds despite physical play inside. North, which trailed 12-2 at the outset but scored 20 second-quarter points, was called for 27 fouls to Sheldon’s 17. The Black Tornado (4-4) meets Crescent Valley at 10 this morning.
