Jeffery Smietana, 20, was listed in critical condition late Wednesday at Rogue Valley Medical Center, according to a nursing supervisor. Smietana was a front-seat passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord that collided with a 2003 BMW sport-utility vehicle at about 3:40 p.m. Oregon State Police trooper Anthony Bakker said the Honda was traveling west on Scenic Avenue and tried to cross Highway 99 when it was struck by the BMW, which was headed south on the highway in the fast lane. The impact totaled the Honda and caused extreme front-end damage to the BMW. Smietana was trapped inside the car immediately following the wreck. Medics from Jackson County Fire District No. 3 used the "jaws of life" to extricate him from the vehicle, OSP senior trooper Bill Bedell said. The driver of the Honda, Jesse Thomas Dzieman, 19, of Central Point was uninjured, as was BMW driver John David Parent, 40, of Central Point. Bedell said all three motorists were wearing seatbelts when the wreck occurred. Air bags in both vehicles deployed upon impact, he said. Traffic was limited to one lane of travel in each direction along the highway while police reconstructionists investigated the crash scene.
