Randy Allan Jans, 56, of Idaho will lose his driver's license for three years and must pay $3,100. He also must enter alcohol treatment. The pedestrian suffered bruises and scratches after Jans hit her with his truck from behind on Berrydale Avenue in September 2013 and knocked her to the ground. According to an affidavit, Jans tried to drive away from a Medford police officer who responded to the accident but was caught. He refused to perform field sobriety tests or give a breath sample. After blood and urine samples were taken, Jans provided a breath sample — which measured his blood alcohol level at 0.14 percent five hours after the collision, almost twice the legal limit. In July 2013, a witness saw Jans striking curbs and driving over a median near Fred Meyer off Center Drive in Medford. When police arrived, Jans said it had been hours since he drank, according to a second affidavit. Police said he was visibly intoxicated, smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He refused to perform field sobriety tests or give a breath sample in that case, as well. Between the two cases, Jans was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of intoxicants, two counts of reckless driving, failure to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person, fourth-degree assault, reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person. He entered a plea of no contest to several of the charges in 2014 before being sentenced this week. "I apologize for the bad mistakes I made," Jans said in Jackson County Circuit Court on Friday, as he stood dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. "I've been going through a lot of stress for the last few years and I made bad choices." Jans said he is seeking mental health treatment and is trying to get into a residential treatment center for alcoholism. His defense attorney, Donald Scales, said Jans is a disabled veteran.
