Two other members of Medford’s Bulldog Boxing Club weren’t so fortunate. Enrique Gallegos, 152 pounds, lost to U-19 world champion Juan McPherson of Cleveland, and heavyweight Mike Wilson had his bout against Nicolai Firtha of Atwater, Ohio, stopped in the second round after Wilson got tagged in the nose with an elbow. Wohosky, a 17-year-old fighting at 119 pounds, used his superior speed to win all four rounds against Watkins and move on to today’s quarterfinal round. Wohosky is scheduled to fight Sergio Ramos of Sacramento, Calif. "(Wohosky) pretty much dominated his fight today," Bulldogs manager Jimmy Pedrojetti said. "He hurt (Watkins) a couple times." Wilson, meanwhile, suffered some bad luck when he was inadvertently whacked in the nose by one of Firtha’s elbows. Wilson immediately began bleeding profusely, and the ringside doctor stopped the fight. "This was a tough loss for Mike because he was really ready for this tournament," Pedrojetti said. "He’d been getting up at 6:30 in the morning every day to work out, and we sent him to Kansas for 10 days to get some good sparring." "(Firtha) was real awkward and just caught Mike after missing a punch. The blood wouldn’t stop, and the doctor stopped the fight. "It was a fluke thing. Mike hardly ever bleeds from the nose, but he got tagged hard with that elbow." Gallegos, 20, was knocked down twice and outscored 22-2 by McPherson. The USA National Championships is for boxers aged 17-34 and is considered the top amateur tournament in the country. SOU Softball RAIDERS SWEEP — At Tucson, Ariz., Brandi Brown picked up a pair of pitching wins as Southern Oregon University cruised to two victories. The 18th-ranked Raiders (12-1) blanked Hastings (Neb.) College, 6-0, then downed Eastern Connecticut State, 8-2. Brown improved to 12-0, while Lisa Aitchison pounded a three-run home run against ECS to provide the big scoring blow. Haley Varley, Kirby Mackay, Seanna Doyel and Kendra Kohler each had two hits against Hastings College. Aitchison, Varley and Kohler contributed two hits apiece in the second game. SOU wraps up its road trip today with a 1 p.m. contest against Hastings and a 3 p.m. game with Whittier College. The Grizzlies took Sheldon to nine innings before dropping a 6-5 contest, then fell in five innings to Thurston, 14-4. Megan Beugli went 3-for-3 and pitched all nine innings in the opener, while Aimee Jeska added two hits. Sheldon scored two times in the top of the ninth to secure the win. Ashland (1-3) pushed a run across in its half of the ninth but left the bases loaded. The five-inning affair with Thurston, which was called due to the 10-run mercy rule, started off as a slugfest by both sides before cascading into a rout. The Grizzlies answered a five-run first by Thurston with three of their own in the bottom half, but they couldn’t counter a seven-run third inning. Alysse Carlson led Ashland at the plate with two hits in four at-bats.
