Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend May 12, 2006 It's a celebration of spring, art, flowers and music The annual Art in Bloom Festival is set for this weekend in downtown Medford This weekend you could study ikebana, sip some chardonnay, admire art, listen to a German band and stock up on garden supplies — all without walking more than a few blocks. The occasion is Art in Bloom, the sixth annual celebration of springtime, art, flowers and music in downtown Medford. It takes place Saturday and Sunday. The center of activities is Vogel Park and the alley between the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater and the Rogue Gallery and Art Center. Main Street will be blocked off between Riverside and Central Avenues to accommodate exhibitors' booths, also Bartlett Street from Eighth Street to the parking garage. Close to 100 exhibitors and vendors plan to take part, offering art, flowers, garden decor and related items for display and sale. Workshops on such topics as wildflowers, watercolors and weaving are planned. Local and regional groups will offer live music, drumming and dance programs. And there will be a wine and food tent. Twenty new works of art created from Medford smudge pots will be displayed. A children's tent will offer arts and crafts activities for those 12 and under, as well as projects for teens. Advertisement The Rogue Gallery will also be open both days, hosting a special art show and some of the demonstrations, one of them a Japanese tea ceremony. Visitors will be invited to vote for a people's choice art award. Since those attending Art in Bloom might also wish to view the visiting Artrain USA, arrangements have been made for an RVTD shuttle to take people to and from the respective sites, says Art in Bloom president Jerry Miller. The shuttle will go from Main Street and Central Avenue to the train parked on tracks at Clark and Cedar streets, and return. Each year Art in Bloom honors an "Arts Patron of the Year." This year the honoree is Gary Lovre, longtime music educator in the Medford schools and arts advocate. He currently serves as president of the board of Craterian Performances, has been Britt Festivals board president and served on the boards of the Rogue Valley Here's a closer look at some of the Art in Bloom activities: ENTERTAINMENT: On Saturday, the Medford High School String Quartet combined group from both schools will Here's a closer look at some of the Art in Bloom activities: ENTERTAINMENT: On Saturday, the Medford High School String Quartet combined group from both schools will play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Just in Time Strolling Quartet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Anne Horton and Friends from noon to 1 p.m., Taiko Drummers from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. and Dance Arts Academy from 4 to 5 p.m. On Sunday, look for Celebrity Dance Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre from 1 to 2 p.m. and the Rogue Valley German Band from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Annie the Clown will provide face painting from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Rogue Valley Chorale will offer some selections outdoors during the day and then perform in concert in the Craterian at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. The show is called "Waltzing in Spring." WINE AND FOOD Seven wineries from the region will serve tastes of their wines in a tent, and local chefs will prepare foods to accompany them. Food and wine samples will be sold for small fees. The wineries are Crater Lake Cellars, Deer Creek Vineyards, Devitt, EdenVale, Shasta View, Spangler and Valley View. Chefs from Harry & David, E&G Catering, Rising Sun Farms and the Trolley Stop will prepare food to be sampled with the wine. Wine tent hours are shorter than those of overall event — 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. Glass Mosaics — an Ancient Art, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with Cat Olson, Demonstration Tent. Ikebana — the Graceful Art, 1 to 2 p.m., with Flora Henningsen, Rogue Gallery and Art Center. Watercolor Magic, 2 to 3 p.m., with Anne Brooke, Demonstration Tent. Weaving and Spinning, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., with the Weaving Guilds of the Rogue Valley, Demonstration Tent. SUNDAY, MAY 14: Art of Bonsai, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Mark Tapley, Demonstration Tent. Pot Luck Container Gardens, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., with Connie Skillman, Demonstration Tent. Japanese Tea Ceremonies, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with Tsu Tai Novick, Rogue Gallery garden, four ceremonies, beginning at 1:30, 2, 2:30 and 3 p.m. CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES: Plant a flower for Mom. Make a Mother's Day Card. Try Asian scratch art with Central Art Supply. Make a Japanese kimono with Washi paper. Enjoy Japanese brush painting. Let your imagination take flight at the kids' giant mural painting. SMUDGE POTS Each year a number of local artists are invited to create works of art using those old smudge pots that heated Rogue Valley pear orchards in earlier days. Twenty new works of smudge pot art will be displayed this year. They'll be unveiled at an invitational reception in the Craterian tonight May 12, and then placed on view for the public Saturday and Sunday on Bartlett Street in front of the Rogue Gallery.
