GIRLS BASKETBALL Youthful Tornado wallops Warriors, 63-26 Ninth-ranked North Medford struck quickly and forcefully in a 63-26 non-conference girls basketball victory over visiting Del Norte Tuesday night. "With only one returning starter, we have a lot of kids who will have to step in and get after it," said fourth-year North Medford coach Mike Kay. The Tornado did just that. North had 33 steals and whirled to a 20-1 advantage late in the first quarter. At the half, it was 35-10. Senior Ashlee Giles paced North with 15 points, nine steals, three rebounds and four assists. Lu Crenshaw chipped in 11 points. Both played less than a half. Junior center Tressa Manwaring pulled down eight rebounds to go with seven points. A year ago, the Tornado needed to work overtime to gain a 58-44 victory over Del Norte in its season opener at Crescent City, Calif. "They caught us by surprise last year," said Kay. "They ended up 22-5, but this is a better start and we were better prepared.'' Junior Amber Lund topped the Warriors with 12 points and nine rebounds.
