GIRLS HOOPS: Crater falls short against No. 1 Millers By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jan 06, 2023 10:59 PM A A SPRINGFIELD — Crater saw its halftime lead over top-ranked Springfield evaporate during a 19-0 run in a third quarter that allowed the Millers to take control for a 46-41 win in the Midwestern League girls basketball opener for both teams Friday night. Consecutive 3-pointers by Abigail Winslow allowed Crater to pull within 38-31 early in the fourth quarter and created confidence in a potential comeback. When Sage Winslow scored on a driving basket, the deficit was 42-36 with about two minutes to play but the Comets were unable to convert on their next trip and Springfield did just enough to keep them at bay. “I was definitely proud of the effort and proud of the discipline that they showed for the majority of the game,” said Crater head coach Scott Dippel of his squad. “I think we’ll be a better team tomorrow for having played as hard as we did today.” Sage Winslow finished with 14 points while Isabel McCauley added eight points, four rebounds and four steals for Crater (8-5, 0-1 MWL). Abigail Winslow had nine points and Lydia Traore was steady in the paint with eight points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. The Comets were already without a pair of guards in Addison Dippel and Samantha Gish, both in concussion protocol, so the backcourt efforts certainly didn’t go unnoticed by the Crater coach. “I thought our guards especially stepped up and worked really well defensively, especially in that first half,” said coach Dippel. Addison Vranes managed three steals in the fourth quarter alone to help spur Crater’s comeback effort. Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam led Springfield (8-4, 1-0) with 19 points, including a pair of big 3-pointers and a running shot in the third quarter that bolstered her team. “Those were all big-time plays,” said coach Dippel. “It wasn’t a blown assignment, we were playing where we needed to play and she just hit tough shots.” CRATER (41): Gugliotta 0, S.
