A closer look at her work reveals Rex Smith's passion for natural environments — and for the people who inhabit them. A passion that landed the 85-year-old artist in Josephine County jail after she was arrested in 2005 for protesting the Biscuit Fire timber salvage sale. But two days in jail and an 18-month probation did not diminish her commitment to forest preservation. Rex Smith will host an open house from noon to dusk Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14 and 15, at her studio in her own natural habitat on the Greensprings Highway, or 11600 Highway 66, Ashland. Stands of fir and pine surround Rex Smith's home and studio about 17 miles east of Ashland, where she has lived since she moved to Oregon from Indiana about 25 years ago. She continually works to improve the health of her surrounding forest. One of her paintings, inspired by corporate logging near her home, depicts an angel weeping over the stump of a tree. The artist focuses on small details of nature as she paints her sweeping landscapes, celestial scenes, colorful florals and garden scenes in oil and watercolor.
