Panthers snare first SWC win Friday Jan 27, 2017 at 2:00 AM Jan 28, 2017 at 12:12 AM It was an unfortunate and familiar sight for coach James Wightman and the South Medford boys basketball team, who watched their 22-point lead fizzle to 10 in the third quarter on Friday. “I was thinking, ‘Here we go again,’” said Wightman, whose Panthers have shown the ability to grab big leads early in games only to watch them slip away late in the second half. The host Panthers, however, showed the resilience it had been lacking and pulled away for a 70-48 victory over South Eugene, the first Southwest Conference win for South Medford and Wightman. “We just played a lot better and we pressured them and got stops,” said Wightman, whose team yielded only 14 points in the first half. “That’s the best we’ve played all year on (the defensive) side of the ball.” Riley Martin went for 18 points and three steals for the Panthers (6-11, 1-5 SWC), who received a 14 points and eight rebounds from Chase Cota, who went 5-for-5 from the field. Kaleb Franklin added 12 points and Jaylin Parnell corralled 10 rebounds for South Medford. Collin ChubbFertal and Jay Elmore paced South Eugene (8-8, 4-2) with 14 points apiece.
