Comets humble Grizzlies By Joe Zavala,Ashland Daily Tidings Apr 26, 2006 12:00 AM A A CENTRAL POINT & The Grizzlies could not escape the wrath of a relentless and occasionally unmerciful foe Tuesday: Themselves. Ashland High botched several key plays and Crater gladly took advantage in a 10-0, six-inning Southern Oregon Conference baseball blowout at Anhorn Field. The Comets, who completed a three-game season sweep of Ashland with the win, pounded a season-high 19 hits against three Ashland pitchers, including 10 off Grizz starter Gus Gaviglio. The Grizzlies couldn& t come close to matching that against Crater ace Tony Davidson, who held Ashland to three hits in a complete-game shutout. & We came out flat,& Ashland head coach Don Senestraro said. & I think maybe we thought we were better than what (we are). Crater has a great team. You& ve gotta come out and you& ve got to play baseball against the top three teams in the SOC, and we didn& t play well.& The loss snapped the Grizzlies& longest winning streak of the season at five and dropped Ashland into fifth place in the SOC at 6-7. Crater improved to 9-4 in league play, two games behind second-place South Medford. Ashland (9-9 overall) bobbled a chance to stay close in the third inning when catcher Robby Bruce fumbled a perfect relay throw, allowing Chuck Grabowski to score with two outs. The wild play & Senestraro contested it, arguing that Grabowski should have slid & kept the inning going long enough for the next batter, Daniel Lovemark, to hit a three-run homer over the 390-foot sign in center field. Ashland also crippled its chances with a base-running error in the second and a fielding miscue that led to a Tony Murphy triple. & If we play ball the way we& ve been playing ball we can beat any team out here, but we beat ourselves,& Ashland designated hitter Lewis Sebrell said. & We need to play our game in order to win ball games. We can& t just expect to take the field and play good every time.& Crater put the Grizzlies away early by scoring four runs on seven hits in the sixth off Ashland reliever Charlie Sebrell. Lovemark was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including the game-clincher, and Zach Boskovich was 4-for-4. Ashland had a runner in scoring position in four of the first five innings, but failed to bring him home each time.
