Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend April 26, 2006 Questions and answers: Circuit Court hopefuls open up Why do you want to be a judge? Lisa Greif: "I feel that it is important to be a part of my community, and if I was to become a judge, I could have a positive effect on Jackson County citizens who appear before the court. ... I like the idea of researching issues, evaluating evidence and issuing fair rulings. ... I also have faith in our local court system and think I would help continue to make it work efficiently and effectively." Ron Grensky: "Because of my experience as a state senator and lawyer in private practice representing people from all walks of life, arbitrator and mediator, I feel I am uniquely qualified to serve as a judge. When I first became a judge pro tem I discovered how rewarding it was to help people find solutions to their problems, knowing for those people this was one of the most important matters in their lives." Paul Henderson: "It is here in Oregon, and specifically in Jackson County, through my work as a family law lawyer that I have become invested in the people of this community. That investment has, in turn, resulted in the development of a deep concern for the people of Jackson County. That concern has led me to desire to serve." Briefly describe your philosophy of the judicial role, the qualities that are most important for the role, and the greatest challenges to the role: Advertisement Greif: "I believe that you must have the right temperament to be a Circuit Court judge. ... A judge must be impartial and listen openly to all parties that appear before him or her. ... A judge should be well-acquainted with the latest case and statutory law, the rules of evidence and the local and state rules of court. ... In my opinion, the most challenging part of being a judge would be trying to find adequate time and resources to manage the large number of cases that come before you." Grensky: "The judicial role is to apply the law to all who appear before you with honesty, integrity and fairness. The qualities most important are to view all people the same, to show them respect and to devote all your energies to the matters before you and apply the law as set out above. The challenges are in accomplishing all the objectives in the time allotted." Henderson: "A judge should do what is right, and the right that a judge should do should be determined by the process of applying the law to the facts of the case. The ability to listen and be discerning are critical to a judge's ability to carrying out the judicial function. Patience and respect are equally necessary to a judge's effectiveness. The greatest challenge to a judge today is the caseload. ..." More and more governments are trying to keep records out of the public eye. What is your stance on public records and public records law? Greif: Did not answer question, citing possible violation of state's judicial code of conduct. Grensky: "I've always been one for full disclosure. As a judge, you're just going to enforce the law. Sometimes it's difficult to tell exactly where the line is. The agencies are only doing what they think the law requires."
