SOU women shake off rust to beat EOU It took a little longer than expected, but the Southern Oregon womens basketball team was able to take care of business Friday night at McNeal Pavilion. Coming off a nine-day break for the holidays, the Raiders showed definite rust as Eastern Oregon managed a 14-3 lead in the Cascade Conference game. After a timeout and some words of encouragement from SOU coach Shirley Huyett, the Raiders quickly returned to form in outscoring Eastern Oregon 62-19 over the remaining minutes for a 65-33 triumph. Buoyed by more intensity on the defensive side of the court, SOU improved to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in league play. Eastern Oregon dropped to 2-8 and 0-2. Tiwana Merritt led SOU with 21 points, six assists and four steals, while Ali Richards chipped in eight steals, five assists and four points. Huyett was especially encouraged by Merritts play. The 5-foot-5 senior guard has came into her own over the past few games for the Raiders. Merritt and crew will get a big test tonight as the Raiders play host to St. Francis of Indiana at 5:30 p.m. St. Francis is the No. 1-ranked team in NAIA womens basketball.
