One such holiday was Independence Day, July 4. Our flag program is a fundraiser to help us support our many programs for the youth in the community. When retrieving the flags at the end of July 4 from their many locations, we discovered four flags were missing or lost. These flags cost between $35 and $40 each. For us to buy more flags to replace the lost or stolen flags means less money available to serve our community programs. If you know where one of our flags resides or is being used, please call Russ Chadick at 541-482-0431. We will make arrangements to pick up the flags. Ron Parker Ashland Kiwanis Club Hawaii's aviation feats From your brief story datelined "Kapolei, Hawaii" about the landing of the first solar-powered airplane at "Kalaeola Airport," readers familiar with Hawaii may have trouble identifying those locations. Many recent changes have occurred as Hawaii has replaced some familiar place names with traditional Hawaiian language. Kapolei (Kah-po-LAY) is a land area northwest of Pearl Harbor, part of which was formerly known as Barbers Point. The Kalaeloa Airport (Kah-lai-LOW-ah) is part of the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station. While the airfield is the home of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station, the Navy is no longer operating the field. No doubt the solar airplane, with long wings, did not want to land at busy Honolulu International Airport (HNL), which shares its runway with Hickam Air Force Base, now officially part of "Joint Base Pearl Harbor." Great feats in aviation have occurred at smaller, remote airports and this first-of-a-kind flight will surely make the history books. For more than 115 years, Hawaii has contributed to a rich aviation history, much of it preserved and recounted at the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Claire W. Engle Medford Small erosion of liberty Recently the MT editorially supported Tina Kotek's call for a radical increase in the minimum wage. We know what Kotek's motive is: Further her political career by pandering to the free-lunch crowd. But what is the MT's excuse? Economic ignorance, or do you simply enjoy hopping onto populist bandwagons without first doing your homework? The first is forgivable, up to a point. Strange, isn't it? The Supreme Court has said that two same-sex private individuals may agree to a civil marriage to their common benefit. The government may not intervene. Yet if two other private individuals wish to come to a compensation agreement to their mutual economic benefit, government inserts itself and says, You must do thus and so. Under penalty of law, naturally. And nobody will object to another small erosion of liberty. C.S. Chase Medford Butte Falls' Fourth I am always a little disappointed in the Tribune for not mentioning Butte Falls and their Fourth of July festivities every year. It's a wonderful, relaxing time in this tiny mountain town; a short (15 minutes!) parade, excellent BBQ put on by the two cafes in town, live music, fun and games in the shady park, and did I mention, it's always a little cooler in Butte Falls! Next Fourth should see skydivers dropping in, too. If you want an old-fashioned holiday, consider the short drive to Butte Falls next year; you'll probably end up making it your new family tradition as we have.
