Then, when some sanity returns, we vote for a right- or left-of-center candidate, trusting that neither one or the other will set the world on fire. The primary season is when the other people vote, maybe in a caucus, but always in a het-up atmosphere, where we, the wise ones, do not deign to go. This time around, it seems that left- or right-of-center is considered the worst possible sin. We, the wise ones, may enter the fray when it is over. We and the "establishment" may have been made redundant. We will have no one to blame but ourselves. Hans H. Stroo Medford Stop red-light runners I would hope our new police chief could do something about the red-light runners — especially at Biddle and McAndrews. Any time of day you can see people in a hurry only to cause danger to innocent people by not stopping for the red light. I am thankful our new chief isn't in front of a camera all the time like George seemed to be! A good boss doesn't have to put himself in the limelight if he has a good crew! R.W. Golphenee Medford Industry misinforms Between 1918 and 2009, U.S. tax breaks for oil and gas annually averaged $5.2 billion (2013 dollars) while those for renewables, from their inception in 1979 to 2009 averaged just $2.2 billion. The 2012 global subsidy for all fossil fuels was $775 billion. Meanwhile, the health effects — measured in human and dollar costs — from fossil fuel combustion in smog and particulates, particularly for respiratory diseases, are massive. Since the tax system provides a mechanism for promoting activities that offer social benefit or impeding those that impose social costs, our insanity is evident. It is doubly appalling that fossil fuels corporations, after sucking at this taxpayer teat, have invested millions to misinform the public about the costs of their industry. The evidence lies in their suppression of internal research demonstrating the contribution of combustion products to global warming and their ongoing investment in campaigns of science denial. Surely we should promote vehicles that can be powered by energy generated from renewable sources. The Koch brothers, serving as genuine enemies of the people if there are any, are committed to protecting their profits by undermining support for electric vehicle development in part by funding like-minded GOP candidates for public office. He is a populist who stands up for the working class with his opposition to illegal immigrants and terrible trade deals like TPP. Talk radio host Mark Levin called Donald Trump a 9/11 truther kook. I would rather be a 9/11 truther than a 9/11 liar.
