Pirates belt five homers in win MERLIN - The Phoenix High baseball team blasted five home runs and the Pirates needed their long-ball punch to post a wild 12-10 Skyline Conference victory over North Valley on Tuesday. Jason Wolford clubbed two homers and Travis Dunlap, Jake Mahon and Bobby Dawson added one apiece as the Pirates ran their Skyline record to 6-3 and their overall mark to 9-4. Mahon's homer was the biggest of the game, a three-run blast that wiped out North Valley's 8-7 lead in the fifth inning and gave Phoenix the lead for good. The Knights made a crucial error in the fifth prior to Mahon's homer as they dropped a flyball in the outfield that would have accounted for the third out. "Failing to make a couple of routine catches did us in," North Valley coach Mike Reese said. "Our kids battled but we came up short." The Knights hit four homers themselves, including a solo shot by Paul Mitchell in the bottom of the fifth that made it 11-9. John Gould added an RBI single later in the inning to cut North Valley's deficit to 11-10, but the Knights could get no closer. Bobby Dawson gave the Pirates a bit of breathing room when he swatted a solo homer in the sixth. Wolford, Eric Kessler and winning pitcher Landon Rhodes all had three hits for Phoenix. North Valley has fallen on hard times since losing all-conference catcher Cory Pedersen (ankle) and pitcher Ariah Nead (grades). Justin Sullivan, another of the Knights' top pitchers, has also been hampered by an injury.
