Tornado girls wallop South in tennis, stretch win streak to 32 matches When facing a tennis team that has won 31 straight dual matches, reality tends to set in when setting a team goal. South Medford girls tennis coach Larry Nielson faced that reality Saturday when his Panthers played host to a daunting North Medford squad at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The Black Tornado lived up to its billing and left Nielson and crew empty-handed as North rolled to a 9-0 win for its 32nd straight dual match victory. "We were hoping for one win, but maybe next year," said Nielson, acknowledging North's undeniable prowess on the courts. "They're by far better than everyone else in the league. The only question is who's going to come in second, third or fourth." The win moved North to 12-0 overall and 10-0 in Southern Oregon Conference play. South dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in league. The Panthers had to shake up their lineup with Megan Gerking missing due to illness, putting her normal doubles partner, Stephanie Cohee, into No. 1 singles and altering the overall doubles makeup. Cohee managed to win one game against North's Jenny Brown in a 6-1, 6-0 contest, matching the number of games allowed by the Tornado's No. 2 and 3 singles players Leslie Schultz and Annie Chaney. "It would have maybe made a difference to have her, but I don't know, North's awfully good," Nielson said of Gerking's absence. SINGLES -- Jenny Brown, NM, d.
