Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 8, 2006 Ashland draft master plan covers city trails By VICKIE ALDOUS for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — The City Council unanimously approved a draft Trails Master Plan that, if carried out, would lace the community with trails and bike paths. "We would like to characterize it, almost literally, as a map into the future for Ashland trails," Ashland Trails Master Plan Committee member Jim McGinnis told council members Tuesday night. The plan calls for three trail corridors to run through Ashland parallel to Interstate 5. The Bear Creek Greenway along Bear Creek and the Central Bike Path crossing through the middle of town are largely complete, while the Talent Irrigation District Ditch Trail follows a TID irrigation ditch that mainly traverses private property. However, more and more property owners are granting easements to allow public access along ditch trail segments. Five trail corridors would then run perpendicular to the set of three trails. Those trails would wind from Ashland’s hills down to the greenway, following the banks of Wrights, Ashland, Roca, Clay, Hamilton and Tolman creeks. Advertisement The Ashland Creek corridor already has a substantial trail system because the creek runs through Lithia Park. The creation of trails along Roca Creek would be made easier by the fact that the creek crosses Southern Oregon University and Ashland School District land. The trails system would be created through the use of public land, land purchases and voluntary easement donations from private owners. "It almost becomes like a giant connect-the-dots puzzle," said Ashland Parks and Recreation Department Director Don Robertson. In other business, the council approved granting the Ashland Chamber of Commerce $245,241 and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival $112,200 in grants using hotel/motel tax revenues in order to promote tourism and economic development.
