Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. Hard work has paid off for this Phoenix family who, after more than a year, has a home for the holidays. The married couple and five children squeezed into a motel room after their rental went up for sale and they couldn’t find a suitable replacement. That first month’s accommodations turned into nine, until the building closed for renovations. They bounced between other temporary lodgings until a friend invited them to stay in his trailer. Inadequate housing qualified the family to receive food, clothing and personal-hygiene products from Medford’s Maslow Project, which also provided financial assistance to keep the kids active in school-sponsored sports and activities. The teens do well in school, enjoy helping their neighbors and volunteer to serve meals at their church. The father is a veteran who works at a skilled-labor job, making too much money to qualify for many services, yet not enough to meet all the family’s needs, according to Maslow Project case managers. The family’s entire savings went toward application fees, deposits and first and last months' rent for their new residence. The year of instability also claimed most of the family’s household goods. A set of twin-sized bunk beds with sheets and a queen-sized bed with sheets would improve their sleeping arrangements. Lamps and dressers would be welcome, along with kitchenware, such as pots and pans, dishes, glassware, utensils, flatware, a slow cooker and grill. New coats and shoes would keep the family warmer this winter. The boys — ages 17, 15 and 14 — wear shoe sizes 11½, 9½ and 8½, respectively, and like Nike sneakers. The younger two wear large-size coats, while their older brother wears extra-large. The two girls, ages 20 and 13, both wear large-size coats. The older one could use size-8 shoes and pants in women’s size 12. The younger girl would love fashion boots in size 6 and dresses in women’s size 5/6. The father wears a 3-4XL coat and size 12W shoes. The mother’s coat size is large. Gas cards and assistance with repairs for their vehicle’s radiator would help the couple stretch their income.
