Why is there not one set fine for parking illegally? The varying fines for these spaces make no sense. Can you explain? — Nan F., Medford Nan, disregard any fines listed on accessible (that's what it's called now) parking signs and just remember $435. That’s the current base fine for unlawfully parking in an accessible parking space, said Sgt. Don Lane of the Medford Police Department. The fines listed on accessible parking signs depend on when the sign was installed, explained Deputy City Manager Chris Reising. “We don’t typically make businesses rip out the old signs and put in new signs when the state changes its requirements,” Reising said, adding that the state no longer requires that fines be listed on accessible parking signs. According to Oregon Revised Statute 811.615, the penalties “shall be imposed regardless of the text or symbol displayed on the marking or sign reserving the space or aisle for persons with disabilities.” Anyone caught parking in an accessible parking space, a wheelchair-only accessible parking space, a van-accessible parking space or a wheelchair-only and van-accessible parking space without the appropriate permit will receive a citation for $435, Lane said. (Van-accessible and wheelchair-only parking spaces are 9 feet wide with an 8-foot-wide aisle, compared with a typical accessible parking space which is 9 feet wide with a 6-foot-wide aisle, Reising said.) Any sworn officer or Medford Police Department volunteer can issue a warning or citation for unlawfully parking in an accessible parking space, Lane said.
