Zempel, Wright ignite Chiefs to track victory Prep roundup Rogue River's girls won 11 of 17 events as the Chieftains won a four-way Skyline Conference meet at Phoenix on Tuesday. Sarah Zempel won three throwing events, putting the shot 37 feet, 4 inches and adding wins in the discus (109-10) and javelin (105-10). Bobbi Wright led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 800, turning in a lifetime best of 2 minutes, 32.6 seconds. Wright also won the 1,500 in 5:04.5. The Chiefs scored 98 points, while Hidden Valley was second with 86, followed by Illinois Valley, 29, and Phoenix 21. Hidden Valley's boys were victorious with 105 points, Rogue River had 87, followed by Phoenix, 46, and Illinois Valley 8. Joe Samek won three jumping events, clearing 6-4 in the high jump, while adding wins in the long jump (19-5) and triple jump (39-5). In another four-way Skyline meet at Mazama High in Klamath Falls, Henley's Kelli Holloway came up with an impressive double in the shot put (41-3) and discus (139-3) as the Hornets piled up 138 points. Lakeview had 55, North Valley 52 and Mazama 11. In a Southern Oregon Conference dual at Modoc Field in Klamath Falls, Roseburg's boys topped Klamath Union, 83-61, while the Indians defeated the Pelicans 81-64 in girls competition. L.J. Newsom leaped 20-10 for the Klamath in the boys long jump. He added wins in the high jump (6-0) and triple jump (39-3). Ian Dobson turned in a 4:07.6 effort in the 1,500 meters. Nick Pappas won the high hurdles (15.3) and intermediate hurdles (42.9) for Roseburg, which swept all three throwing events. GILCHRIST INVITATIONAL -- At Gilchrist, Cascade Christian's Crystal Tait placed in four events, including a first-place in the long jump, during the 10-school girls meet. Bonanza won the event with 110 points, while the Challengers placed sixth with 39. Tait produced a season-best mark of 15-10 in the long jump. The senior also took third in the 800 (2:42.2) and ran a leg on both of Cascade's fourth-place relay teams. Sophomore Kali Warren also ran a leg on both relay teams. In addition, she finished third in the 100 (13.7) and fourth in the pole vault (6-3). Kathleen Wolf and Sara Anders ran legs on Cascade's 400-relay, while Amy Roseburg and Lindsey Bostwick completed the Challengers 1,600-relay team. Bostwick placed sixth in the 800 (2:51.6) and Amy Sumrall finished fourth in the 3,000 (4:49.3).
