Since You Asked: Red light sensor still at intersection Sunday Apr 1, 2018 at 2:01 AM Why was the red light camera at the corner of Biddle and McAndrews taken down when the new right turn lane was put in? On Biddle going south, to turn left to go under the I-5 overpass I have twice been in the new right turn lane and been honked at from drivers (women both times) turning left from Biddle while running a red light. One other time, I was in the south lane of Biddle turning left to go under I-5, and a motorcycle cop was ahead of me. He watched two cars go through a yellow and one go through a red light. He just sat and waited for it to turn green again, and we all went. He took no action at all. — Richard, via email There is still a sensor to detect drivers who run red lights at the intersection of Biddle and McAndrews roads, according to Medford Police Department Sgt. Don Lane. Medford has sensors to capture red light runners at that intersection plus three others — Barnett Road and Stewart Avenue, Central Avenue and Fourth Street, and Riverside Avenue and Eighth Street. The sensors have led to a reduction in the number of drivers running red lights and have reduced crashes, according to Lane. Beginning April 1, MPD will add photo speed enforcement at the Central Avenue and Fourth Street intersection and the Riverside Avenue and Eighth Street intersection. “As far as photo-enforced intersections are concerned, many drivers will speed through the intersection in an attempt to avoid a red-light citation,” Lane said. “It is our belief that knowing there is a potential for a speeding citation at these intersections will reduce the frequency of this act and increase the safety of our intersections.” During April, drivers who speed through the photo-enforced intersections will receive warnings.
