The Blue Aces defeated the Molalla Thrashers, 5-1, Thursday to win their pool, thus receiving an opening-round bye in the 28-team tournament. The Medford squad is one of eight undefeated teams going into today’s third round. The Blue Aces play the Creswell Fury at noon today. The teams have split a pair of games against each other this season. Byrne struck out seven in the six-inning game against the Outlaws that ended early due to the eight-run mercy rule. "(Byrne) stepped up a notch," Blue Aces coach Doc Chaplin said. "She had an outstanding rise and her drop was working. Her inside bread-and-butter pitch was right on the money." The Blue Aces opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Bethany Stousland’s RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Jackie Fulton accounted for the runs. Fulton and Katie Kaufman each had two hits for the Blue Aces. The Blue Aces played errorless ball against the Outlaws. "Our defense was the big key along with our pitching," said Chaplin. "If we can play like that the rest of the tournament, we’ll come back with the championship." Against Molalla, Jackie Chaplin provided two hits and scored three runs, while Jonni Byrne contributed two hits and two runs. Pitcher Megan Beugli struck out five and allowed the Thrashers six hits. Chaplin placed third in a home-run derby during Thursday’s opening ceremonies. American Legion A Baseball ASHLAND PILOTS 4, ROSEBURG PEPSI 3 — At Ashland, Jackson Rowe delivered a one-out single to knock home Chad Hegdahl with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and extend the playoff series to a deciding third game. Rowe, a junior-to-be at Ashland High, also accounted for the Pilots’ earlier run production with a bases-clearing double in Ashland’s three-run fifth at North Mountain Park. Hegdahl drilled three hits, including two doubles, and scored two runs to pace the Pilots’ nine-hit attack. He led off the ninth with a single before Bill Rowe drew a walk. Titus Weston advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, then Jackson Rowe finished off Roseburg, which won Thursday’s opener, 9-6. Ashland travels to Roseburg’s Legion Field at 7 p.m. tonight to determine which Zone 4 team moves on to next week’s American Legion A state tournament in Eagle Point. James Page is the Pilots’ projected starter after Brian Ross fired seven scoreless innings in relief of Bill Rowe on Friday night and earned the pitching victory.
